Habitat:
Suranakanda consists of dried corm of Amorphophallus campanulatus (Roxb.) Blume. (Fam. Araceae); a stout, herbaceous plant, cultivated throughout the plains of the country.1
Morphology Description :
Drug occurs as cut pieces of different shapes and sizes; external surface of cork blackish-brown, rough due to numerous scars and a few adventitious roots, internal portion creamish white; fracture, short; taste, acrid.1

Phytochemistry:
Betulinic Acid, β-Sitosterol, Stigmasterol, Lupeol, Triacontane, Glucose, Galactose, Rhamnose and Xylose.1
As per Ayurveda:
Rasa (Taste) Pungent, astringent
Guna (Property) Light, rough
Veerya (Potency) Hot
Vipaka (End Result) Pungent
Pharmacological Actions:
Traditionally, Amorphophallus campanulatus tuber is used for the treatment of enlarged spleen, liver dysfunction, haemorrhoids, rheumatism and tumour.
Suranakanda is Kaphahara; its primary pharmacological actions are summarized as under:
Digestive System:
i. The extract has been observed to exert a significant chemopreventive effect on experimentally-induced colon carcinogenesis.2
ii. It is a potent hepatoprotective.3
iii. Possesses gastroprotective and anti-ulcerogenic activities.4
Others:
i. The extract possesses significant immunomodulatory activity. 5
