Habitat:

This creeper is native to America. It is found throughout tropical and warm temperate regions of the world.

 

Morphology Description (Habit):

Primarily a regenerating annual (occasionally perennial) herb, with (often) reddish, glabrous or rarely pubescent stems, prostrate, trailing (rarely weakly twining) to c. 50 cm. Leaves trifoliolate, on petioles 1-11 cm long, with leaflets ovate in outline, 0.8-4.5 cm long, 0.6-4 cm wide; glabrous to sub-glabrous, usually shiny; margins entire to deeply lobed (lobes distinctly widened above and oblong obtuse or subacute); stipules peltate, sometimes spurred, ovate, 4-15 mm long. Inflorescence a few-flowered raceme, withpeduncle 2-22.5 cm long; pedicels 1-2.5 mm long; calyx 2.5 mm long, glabrous, teeth minute; corolla yellow, 5-7 mm long. Pods cylindrical, 1.5-5 cm long, 2.5-3 mm wide,glabrous to sparingly pubescent with short adpressed hairs, black when ripe; 6-12-seeds/pod ; 80,000-130,000 seeds/kg.1

Phytochemistry:

A wide range of active components including flavonoids, isoflavonoids, tannins, stigmasterol, vitamin K, vitamin C and proteins have been isolated from the different parts of the plant.2

Chemical examination of the stems of the plant were found to consist of five sugars viz D-glucose, D-xylose , D-galactose, L-rhamnose and D- arabinose along with five amino acids β- Alanine, Alanine, Lucine, γ- Aminobutyric acid and Valine.3

 

Pharmacological Actions:

It is widely used in ayurvedic system of medicine to treat jaundice, diarrhoea, haemorrhoids, dyspepsia, sedative, coolant, anthelmintic and good for eyes. The plant is reported to possess beneficial effects as a tonic, diuretic, hepatoprotective, antioxidant and antimicrobial. It is also found to induce defence mechanisms against the exposure of UV-B radiations.2

 

Digestive System:

i. Phaseolus trilobus posses hepatoprotective property and is effective in oxidative stress induced cholestatic hepatic injury.4

 

Endocrinal System: 

i. The root extract possesses significant antidiabetic properties.5

 

Others: 

i. Possesses significant antioxidant activity.6
